Recommended Cage Sizes & Why It Matters
Giving your parrot room to thrive — not just survive.
At Parrot Stars, we’ve spent years helping bird owners set up truly excellent homes. One of the most recurring issues we see: a mismatch between bird size/energy and the cage they buy. Many online cages (from Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair) look good on the listing, but the dimensions, design, bar-spacing or durability fall short.
We’re here to simplify the process — explain the “why,” show you what to look for, and give you solid recommendations that work. And yes — we sell the cages we recommend, so you can get your cage right from us and receive a discount when you purchase your bird from us.
Why Proper Cage Size – & Quality – Matters
1. Birds need space, flight, movement & mental stimulation
According to the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), many cages sold as “appropriate for parrots” are actually too small for the bird to exhibit natural behaviours. For example, the AAV notes that cage size should be “at least wide enough to accommodate stretched wings, and tall enough for long-tailed birds.
The rule of thumb: a cage should be 1.5 – 2 times the adult bird’s wingspan in width, length, and depth — and the larger area you can provide, the better.
2. Many online/retail cages are misleading or undersized
Some cages marketed for “medium parrots” or “large conures” or “small macaws” have dimensions that barely meet the minimum amount of space required, if at all — the bird ends up cramped, stressed, bored, or unable to flap its wings or climb comfortably.
Bar spacing, durable construction, good access doors, perches, space for toys, and a design built specifically for parrots (as opposed to generic bird cages) all matter.
The Parrot Stars team has thoroughly vetted each of our available cages based on design, durability, and actual space after perches/toys - not just advertising claims.
3. Investing correctly now saves you from frustration later
Buying a cage that is too small, too flimsy, or poorly designed means you’ll be replacing it, upgrading it, or dealing with behavioral or health issues in your bird.
We believe in setting our birds — and you — up for success from day one.

Small Parakeets - Budgerigars/Bourke, Lovebirds, Parrotlets, Finches
Cage Size (width x depth): ~27″ × 24″ or more
Bar Spacing: Up to 1/2″ (plenty of toys + climbing space)
Medium Parrots
Quakers, Cockatiels, Conures, larger Parakeets - Ringneck/Moustached, Pionus, Lories, Poicephalus species - Senegal/Meyer’s, small Amazons, multiple small birds
Cage Size (width x depth): ~36″ × 24″ or equivalent

Large Parrots
African Greys, smaller Cockatoos, Eclectus, larger Amazons, Mini Macaws
Cage Size: ~48″ × 36″ or more
Bar Spacing: 3/4″-1″ (strong construction required)
Extra Large Parrots
Macaws, Cockatoos
Cage Size: ~60″ × 36” or more
Bar Spacing: 1″ - 1/4” (very durable build)
Note: “Living space” means the actual usable interior of the cage after perches, toys, etc. It should allow wing-spread, stretching, climbing, and the bird should not touch cage walls or top during normal movement.
What to Look for When Buying a Cage
Here are key features to check:
Interior width/length/depth: Avoid tall and narrow cages; birds tend to use horizontal space (side-to-side) more than up-and-down.
Bar spacing & gauge: Bars must be close enough to prevent head or foot entrapment, but strong enough for the bird’s beak strength.
Do NOT trust misleading advertising: Many cages list “4 ft tall” but are narrow and shallow—any real, usable space is much less.
Secure latches, doors, and feeders: Birds chew, climb, and test boundaries; weak doors lead to escapes.
Good build quality: Powder-coating, strong welds, durable finishes.
Designed for enrichment: Enough space for multiple perches, toys, foraging areas, flight, and movement.
Upgrade-friendly: As birds age or you add more toys/playstands, extra space means more options.

Placement & Room Considerations
The cage should be placed in a family living area, not isolated, but with enough quiet for recovery/rest.
Avoid kitchen fumes, drafty windows, or high-traffic chaos. The environment impacts bird stress and behavior.
Make sure you have space around the cage for toys/perches/a play stand outside of the cage as well.
