Purchasing a Parrot Companion

At Parrot Stars, we’re dedicated to ensuring every parrot leaves for a safe, happy, and enriching home. Because parrots are intelligent, social beings with complex needs, we have a few important requirements that are non-negotiable. Our hope is that future — and current — parrot owners are willing and able to go far beyond these minimum standards, creating the best possible life for their feathered companions.
Please review the following before taking your parrot home:

1. Proof of Large Caging, Toys, & Perches

Parrots thrive in spacious, stimulating environments.

  • Cage Requirements: If you already have a cage, please provide clear photos or videos (with dimensions) so we can confirm it’s the correct size.
  • Toys & Perches: A minimum of six toys and six perches are required to ensure daily enrichment.
  • Send Proof in Advance: To avoid any chance of a last-minute issue, we strongly encourage you to text us your proof of housing, toys, and perches before coming to the store.
  • Please send your photos or videos to 312-709-3367 and include:
  1. Your full name
  2. The species you intend to purchase
  3. The date you plan to purchase

Tip: Meeting the minimum is just the start — adding more enrichment, perches, and toys can dramatically improve your parrot’s well-being.

Don’t have what you need yet? We carry a large selection of high-quality cages, toys, and perches to make it easy to give your parrot the best life possible from day one.

2. The Parrot Must Leave in a Travel Carrier

For safety and comfort, every parrot must go home in a proper travel carrier — never a cardboard box.

  • If you already have one, please bring it clean and ready to use.
  • Need a carrier? We offer a variety of secure, comfortable options designed for parrots of all sizes.

3. Food & Nutrition

Consistency is key during your parrot’s transition home.

  • You’ll need to purchase the food your parrot is currently eating to prevent stress or digestive issues.
  • Our knowledgeable staff will walk you through all of the required and recommended foods that will support your bird’s long-term health.

Tip: While the minimum requirement is keeping their current diet consistent, expanding their menu with safe, enriching foods can boost your parrot’s happiness and health.

4. “Send Home” Training Session

Before taking your parrot home, you’ll attend our free “Send Home” training, which lasts about 2 hours.
In this session, you’ll learn:

  • Household safety and setup
  • Feeding instructions and routines
  • Positive reinforcement training and parrot behavior
  • Terms of purchase and care expectations

Our goal is to prepare both you and your parrot for success — and we promise you’ll leave feeling confident and inspired.

Thank you for your commitment to providing your parrot with the best possible care in captivity. These steps ensure that every bird leaving Parrot Stars begins life in their new home with comfort, enrichment, and love — and that you, as a parrot owner, are empowered to go far beyond the basics for your feathered friend.

Reminder:

Please text photos of your proof of caging, perches, and toys to 312-709-3367 when ready to buy. Include your name and the species you are interested in.
