About: Raw Unsalted Brazil Nuts (In Shell)

Offer your parrot a premium, nutrient-dense reward with raw, unsalted Brazil nuts in shell. These large, hard-shelled nuts are especially valued in avian care for foraging enrichment, beak exercise, and as a high-value training reward for medium to large parrots.

Brazil nuts are naturally rich in healthy fats, plant-based protein, and are one of the most concentrated natural food sources of selenium, an essential trace mineral. Scientific nutrition research identifies selenium as critical for antioxidant defense systems, thyroid hormone function, and immune health in animals, including birds. When fed carefully and sparingly, Brazil nuts can support overall wellness as part of a balanced parrot diet.

Why Brazil nuts can benefit parrots (in moderation):

  • Selenium support: Selenium plays a key role in antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from oxidative stress and support immune and metabolic health.
  • Healthy fats for energy: Provides concentrated energy useful for active parrots or as an occasional conditioning treat.
  • Protein & minerals: Supplies amino acids plus minerals such as magnesium and phosphorus that support tissue and bone health.
  • Foraging & beak engagement: The hard shell encourages natural cracking behaviors, mental stimulation, and beak use—important components of avian enrichment recommended in behavioral research.

Important bird-care note:
Brazil nuts are extremely rich and should be fed very sparingly. Excessive intake—especially of selenium or fat—may contribute to toxicity or weight gain. These nuts should be considered a high-value, occasional treat, never a daily food.

Ingredients

100% Raw, Unsalted Brazil Nuts (In Shell)

No salt, no roasting, no additives or preservatives.

Feeding Instructions

Use only as an occasional treat, training reward, or enrichment food.

How to offer:

  • Serve in shell for parrots capable of cracking hard nuts (typically medium to large species).
  • For smaller parrots, crack the shell yourself and offer very small pieces under supervision.
  • Always check nuts for freshness and absence of mold before feeding.

Suggested treat limits:
(Because of selenium content, these limits are intentionally conservative.)

  • Small parrots (budgies, lovebirds, parrotlets): Tiny sliver no more than once every 2–3 weeks
  • Medium parrots (cockatiels, conures, quakers): ⅛–¼ nut once every 1–2 weeks
  • Large parrots (amazons, greys, cockatoos, macaws): ¼–½ nut once every 1–2 weeks

Do not feed daily. Reduce or eliminate if other high-fat or nut treats are offered.

Best practices:

  • Treats (including nuts) should make up only a small percentage of the total diet.
  • Base your parrot’s nutrition on a quality formulated diet, supplemented with vegetables and appropriate fresh foods.
  • Always provide fresh water daily and store Brazil nuts in a cool, dry place to preserve quality and prevent spoilage.
